Riots in Chibuto Gaza
February 12
The U.S. Embassy is sending this Warden Message to advise the American community about riots, including gunfire, in Chibuto, north of Xai Xai (Gaza Province). The police have reported that the situation in Chibuto remains tense. Most of the gunfire has been from police officers firing into the air to disperse crowds. There are currently no reports of injuries or deaths. Although U.S. citizens have not been targeted, U.S. Embassy Maputo advises persons to avoid travel in this area and take no unnecessary risks. Problem areas can change with little notice. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid any demonstrations or large gatherings of people.
Please note the Embassy will be closed Monday, February 18 for Presidents' Day.
