Update on the Civil Unrest

February 6, 2008

The U.S. Embassy has received information that demonstrators are gathering on Avenida Forcas Populares near Praca dos Herois.  Once again, demonstrators are throwing rocks at passing vehicles.  This time, it appears that disgruntled chapa drivers are protesting.  While the route to the airport is currently clear, demonstrations are again very close to the Praca dos Herois and it is possible that the route to the airport could again become blocked later in the day.  Additionally, demonstrators located at Praca OMM (where Kaunda and Lenin intersect) have been forced to move north on Lenin.  Finally, gunshots have been reported in the vicinity of Jose Macamo hospital.

We urge people to avoid all unnecessary travel and remain at your residence/hotel until further notice.
