Civil Disturbances in Maputo
February 5
The U.S. Embassy is sending this Warden Message to advise the American community about violence that has emerged due to the increase in the price of riding chapas (minibuses). At this time, road blocks, rock throwing and other violence is occurring in several areas of the city. There have been reports of crowds gathering in Hulene (northeast of the airport), in Magoanine at the Praca da Juventude and the EN1 highway going toward the police academy (before ACIPOL at bairro 25 de Julho and bairro do Benfica) at the police check point. In addition, there have been reports of shots fired near ShopRite and Mica. Because violence can occur anywhere, U.S. Embassy Maputo advises persons to avoid any unnecessary travel. It is important to be aware that problem areas in the city could change with little notice.
The Embassy will provide updates on the disturbances at maputo.usembassy.gov. Please monitor these updates, avoid travel to affected areas and take no unnecessary risks.
