Warden Messages
Flooding 2008
10 January 2008
The U.S. Embassy is sending this Warden Message to advise the American community about extensive flooding in Mozambique. The Government of Mozambique has reported a Red Alert for flooding in the Zambeze River basin. Mozambican authorities are continuing with compulsory evacuation of those who have refused to evacuate voluntarily. We advise against all travel to this area.
Americans should follow all official instructions from the Government of Mozambique regarding the flooding. All U.S. citizens currently in impacted areas should secure their travel documents, (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture ID’s, etc.) by placing them in a safe, waterproof location and carrying them at all times. U.S. citizens are reminded to keep friends and family in the United States apprised of your whereabouts. The Embassy will provide daily updates on the flooding at maputo.usembassy.gov. Please monitor the updates, avoid travel to affected areas and take no unnecessary risks.
For information on disaster preparedness, please see the Federal Emergency Management webpage at www.fema.gov.
Americans living or traveling in Mozambique are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration web site so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Mozambique.
